Inductive Sensor Overview

An inductive proximity sensor belongs to the category of non-contact electronic proximity sensor

An inductive proximity sensor belongs to the category of non-contact electronic proximity sensor. It is used for positioning and detection of metal objects. The sensing range of an inductive switch is dependent on the type of metal being detected. Ferrous metals, such as iron and steel, allow for a longer sensing range, while nonferrous metals, such as aluminum and copper, may reduce the sensing range by up to 60 percent. Inductive sensors in a non-contact mode can last long as they are not subjected to any mechanical wear and tear. Also, they are resistant to extreme environmental conditions, vibration, dust and moisture, making them an ideal option for use in several industries. Common applications of inductive sensors include metal detectors, traffic lights, car washes, and a host of automated industrial processes. Because the sensor does not require physical contact it is particularly useful for applications where access presents challenges or where dirt is prevalent

Applications of Inductive Sensors

Tool position and distance measurement Conveyor system control Detection of ferrous metals – steel, iron, cobalt, nickel Automotive body assembly Motion position detection and motion control
Coil and transformer production Broken bit detection and lid detection Machining processes Speed sensing, limit switching, and pulse generation Automated industrial processes
In traffic lights and metal detectors For detecting presence of an object in a pick-and-place application during inspection Position Detection Speed Sensing Limit Switching
Pulse Generation Distance Measurement

Inductive sensor benefits

Extremely robust they withstand shocks and vibrations Suitable for harsh industrial environments, High operating temperature range -50°C to 200°C Not effected by water, oil, dirt, or non-metallic particles
Not effected by target surface or colour High IP ratings typically IP69K Quality control monitoring
